Every year, International Women's Day provides a
global platform to focus attention on the continued need to improve women's
status and opportunities all over the world. Development outcomes are greatly
dependent on the degree to which women and girls are empowered to realize their
potential and to benefit from society's gains. The theme for International
Women's Day 2012 is 'Empower
Rural Women - End Hunger and Poverty.' Because of their roles in
raising families, providing and seeking care, and managing household needs, the
health of women is fundamental to healthy communities. Good health correlates
with access to education, agriculture, food security, child survival, economic
opportunities, and family welfare; therefore, investing in health programs that
benefit women has a direct impact on reducing poverty and improving the lives
of women, men, and families across the globe.
